DLMS/COSEM (for Electricity Meters)

DLMS/COSEM (for Electricity Meters)
DLMS/COSEM (IEC 62056) provides a robust and highly structured object-oriented framework for smart meter data exchange. It defines a comprehensive data model using OBIS (Object Identification System) codes to precisely represent distinct attributes of the metering equipment. A critical component of the DLMS/COSEM standard is its advanced security suite. The protocol supports multiple authentication levels and utilizes AES encryption to secure communication packets, ensuring that sensitive energy data and control commands are completely protected against unauthorized access and tampering during transmission.

The communication architecture is based on a client-server model, where the remote reading device or central system acts as the client requesting data from the meter (the server). DLMS/COSEM supports a wide range of communication media, from local serial interfaces to TCP/IP networks, and handles complex data structures such as multi-tariff registers and load profiles effortlessly. By utilizing this structured and encrypted communication framework, raw meter data can be securely retrieved and converted into standard industrial protocols like Modbus or MQTT. This seamless translation makes it highly efficient to integrate smart metering networks directly into modern SCADA and automation systems.
