Read Field Wireless M-Bus Devices and Parse OMS Data with STG Series

01.25.2025

1.Introduction

The STG series provides an efficient and robust solution for reading and interpreting Wireless M-Bus (W-MBus) data from OMS (Open Metering System)-compliant devices. Wireless M-Bus is a popular protocol used for smart metering applications, offering a standardized method for transmitting metering data wirelessly.

2.Overview of Wireless M-Bus and OMS

Wireless M-Bus Protocol: This protocol is part of the EN 13757 standard and is widely adopted in Europe for smart metering. It provides a reliable method for wireless communication between meters and data collection systems, supporting various modes such as S, T, and C modes, each designed for specific use cases and data rates.

Open Metering System (OMS): OMS builds on the Wireless M-Bus protocol, ensuring interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. It standardizes the data format, encryption, and transmission mechanisms, making it a preferred choice for utilities and other stakeholders in the smart metering ecosystem.

3.Key Features of the STG Series

The STG series devices are engineered to simplify the process of collecting and interpreting W-MBus data, offering the following features:

WMBus OMS to Modbus TCP Converter: Converts Wireless M-Bus OMS data to Modbus TCP, allowing seamless integration with systems supporting this protocol.

WMBus OMS to Modbus RTU Converter: Converts Wireless M-Bus OMS data to Modbus RTU for use with serial communication systems.

Transparent Mode: Sends and receives WMBus packages directly to/from TCP/IP or serial interfaces, enabling versatile data handling.

Secure Communication: Built-in support for OMS encryption, enabling secure data transmission.

Ease of Integration: Serial interfaces for straightforward integration with existing data collection and analysis systems.

Configurable Options: User-configurable settings for frequency, encryption keys, and other parameters to meet specific application needs.

4.How to Use the STG Series with Wireless M-Bus Devices

1. Setup and Configuration:

o Connect the STG series device to your computer or data logger via TCP/IP interface.

o Configure the device settings using the builtin web interface. Specify the operating mode (e.g., S, T, or C), encryption keys, and frequency parameters.

2. Data Collection:

o Place the STG device within the communication range of the W-MBus meter.

o Initiate the data collection process via the web interface.

o The device will automatically receive and decode W-MBus packets, extracting OMS-compliant data.

3. Data Parsing and Analysis:

o Use the STG series’ web monitoring tools to see decoded OMS messages.

o Export the parsed data for further analysis as MQTT messages or integrate it into your custom software using the modbus commands.

5.Example Applications

Utility Metering: Collect consumption data from water, gas, or electricity meters for billing and monitoring.

Energy Management: Integrate metering data into energy management systems for real-time monitoring and optimization.

Smart Cities: Enable large-scale data collection for city-wide utility management and analytics.

Industrial Automation: Monitor utility usage in factories and other industrial settings to optimize operations.
